Sander, August (1876–1964)

German portrait photographer. His long-term project was to create a vast composite portrait, Man of the Twentieth Century. Concentrating on German society, he turned his dispassionate gaze on every walk of life – from butchers to bankers – in a way that combined the individual with the archetypal. Much of his work was destroyed when his Cologne studio was bombed 1944.
