Sanders, Bernie (1941– )

US mayor and representative. After working as a freelance writer, carpenter, and youth counsellor, he became the first Socialist mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1982. An unsuccessful candidate for governor in 1972, 1976, and 1986, and for the US Senate in 1971 and 1974, he was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Independent in 1991.
