Sandiford, Erskine Lloyd

    0.03 sec.

Sandiford, Erskine Lloyd (1937– )

Barbadian centre-left politician, prime minister 1987–94. As deputy leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), he took over as prime minister after Errol Barrow's sudden death in 1987. Although criticized for his leadership style and economic management, he secured re-election for the DLP in 1991. However the economy deteriorated, and Sandiford resigned as DLP leader shortly before the party was decisively defeated in 1994 by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), led by Owen Arthur.

He was replaced as DLP leader by his finance minister, David Thompson. His first finance minister, Ritchie Haynes, an early critic of his administration, formed the breakaway National Democratic Party (NDP).
