Sandomierz

Market town in Tarnobrzeg province, Poland, on the left bank of the River Vistula, 80 km/50 mi east of Kielce; population (2001 est) 27,100. Large deposits of sulphur occur locally; industries include chemicals, glass, tanning, and food processing; and fruit is traded from the surrounding area. The 14th-century Gothic cathedral contains Byzantine-style frescoes.

In 1139 Sandomierz, standing west of its present site, became the capital of a duchy. After the Polish partitions, the town became part of Austria in 1795, Russian Poland in 1815, and was returned to Poland in 1919.
