Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Sandrart, Joachim von (1606–1688)

German art historian, painter, and engraver. His book Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste/German Academy of the Noble Arts of Architecture, Sculpture and Painting 1675 contains biographies that are a valuable source of information on 17th-century painting.

Sandrart travelled widely as an artist, collecting information on art which would find its way into his Teutsche Academie. Between 1628 and 1635 he travelled in Italy, visiting Venice, Bologna, Rome, and Naples, and later he stayed in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and in Germany in Munich, Nürnberg, and Augsburg.
