Sandusky

Industrial city, port, and administrative headquarters of Erie County, north Ohio, on Lake Erie, 96 km/60 mi west of Cleveland; population (1996) 29,000. The city is a major distribution point for coal mined in the Appalachian coalfield and transported along the St Lawrence Seaway. Industries include the manufacture of metal and rubber goods, chemicals, plastics, car parts, bearings, vinyl, and crash test dummies paper items, boats, and machinery, as well as commercial fishing. Surrounding farmland grows fruits, which are processed in the city, and nearby vineyards supply its wineries.

Located in the heart of the lake region, Sandusky is a popular vacation spot. It is the site of the Follett House (1827), a station on the Underground Railroad (a network for escaped slaves), which now serves as a museum. NASA's Plum Brook Research Center is situated to the south of the city.
