Sandwich Islands

Former name of Hawaii, a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Captain James Cook originally named the islands in 1778, in honour of John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was then First Lord of the British Admiralty, and Cook's superior.
