Sanford

City and administrative headquarters of Seminole County, north-central Florida, on Lake Monroe and the St Johns River, 32 km/20 mi northeast of Orlando; population (1990) 32,400. It is a centre for the packing and shipping of local vegetables (notably celery) and citrus fruits, and also a thriving tourist centre. Boats, clothing, mobile homes, aluminium products, and electronic equipment are manufactured.

Established as a trading post near Fort Mellon in 1837, it was part of land purchased for citrus groves in the early 1870s by Henry Sanford. It is the site of Seminole Community College (1965) and a naval air station.

Sanford

Town in southern Maine, on the Mousam River, 56 km/35 mi southwest of Portland; population (1990) 20,500. It manufactures aircraft components, plastic, wood, textile products, electronics, and carpets.

It has been industrialized since 1867, when a carriage robe and blanket factory was built. The town includes Sanford Center (population (1990) 10,300) and Springvale.
