Sanford, Terry (1917–1998)

US governor and senator. Sanford became a lawyer and state senator in 1953. As governor of North Carolina, 1961–65, he sponsored progressive legislation including the Higher Education Act (1963) and the North Carolina Fund (1963). He later became president of Duke University, and subsequently a senator in 1987.
