Dole, Sanford Ballard (1844–1926)

Hawaiian judge and public official. A leading lawyer in Hawaiia, he was known for his efforts to reform the native Hawaiian government. After the Hawaiian monarchy had been overthrown, he became president of the Republic of Hawaii, working vigorously for annexation by the USA.

Born in Honolulu, the son of US missionaries, he studied at Williams College. His campaign for annexation by the USA paid off when he became Hawaii's the first territorial governor (1900–03). He was also a judge in the US district court (1903–15).
