Sangamon

River in central Illinois, USA; length 402 km/250 mi. It rises to the northwest of Champaign, is dammed at Decatur to form Lake Decatur, passes the state capital Springfield, and joins the Illinois River above Beardstown.

The Sangamon is known for its association with Abraham Lincoln, who lived in a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river.

It is joined by its South Fork east of Springfield and receives the Salt Creek 64 km/40 mi further downstream.
