Sangamon County

County in central Illinois, partly bordered to the east by the Sangamon River; area 2,243 sq km/866 sq mi; population (1990) 178,400. The river flows west through Springfield, the county and state capital. Outside of industrial Springfield, Sangamon County is mostly farmland; wheat and soybeans are the main crops.

Lake Springfield is in the centre of the county, fed by various streams.
