Sanguinetti, Julio Maria

    0.04 sec.

Sanguinetti, Julio Maria (1936– )

Uruguayan politician and president 1985–90 and 1994–99. His liberal and progressive government was characterized by the consolidation of democracy, human rights and economic restructuring, particularly in relation to Latin American integration.

A member of the long-established progressive Colorado Party (PC), which had its origins in the civil war of 1836, he was elected as federal deputy to the assembly in 1963, and appointed minister of labour and industry and minister of education and culture 1969–73. The oppressive regime of Juan Maria Bordaberry 1972–76 was forcibly removed and military rule imposed before democratic government was restored in 1985. The 1966 constitution was restored with some modifications, and Sanguinetti was elected president.

He was born in Montevideo and graduated in law and social sciences from the University of Montevideo in 1961.
