Sanquhar

Sanquhar

Town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the River Nith, 42 km/26 mi northwest of Dumfries; population (2001) 2,030. It is an agricultural centre, and producer of small textile goods. The town was a burgh before 1484, and became a royal burgh in 1598.

In the 17th century the area had a strong allegiance to the Covenanters, an association for Scottish religious and civil liberty.

Perry Lee Artigan, 51, of Sanquhar Street, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, after a sample contained 44 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.
It opens with mournful ballad In Sanquhar, which coasts along at a dreamy pace before blending into a slow-handed acoustic guitar and wonderful lyrics: "Let's all go cycling in Sanquhar/feel the rain fall on our legs in Sanquhar".
POST OFFICE 294 YEARS OLD THE post office in Sanquhar, Scotland, has been going since 1712, and is the oldest in the world.
