Santa Bárbara

Administrative capital of the department of Santa Bárbara in western Honduras; population (1996) 29,000. The town is situated 100 km/62 mi from Puerto Cortés, for which it is the commercial depot. Products include sombreros, panama hats, spirits, and woven junco handicrafts. There is an airport.

Santa Barbara is in an attractive setting, surrounded by hills, forest, and rivers. Roads connect the town with the Tegucigalpa–San Pedro Sula and San Pedro Sula–Nuevo Ocotopeque highways, running along the western side of Honduras.

The ruins of the colonial city of Tencoa lie nearby.
