Santa Catalina Island

Resort island in the Pacific Ocean, 42 km/26 mi southwest of Los Angeles, California; length 35 km/22 mi; width 2–13 km/1–8 mi. It is one of the Santa Barbara Islands. Avalon (population (1990) 2,900), the island's only city, has a boardwalk, golf course, casino, and ferry linking it to the mainland.

The interior wilderness region has been in conservancy since 1974. The island is popular for deep-sea fishing.

It was seen by the Portuguese navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1919 William Wrigley bought it and developed an estate.
