Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Capital of Tenerife and of the Canary Islands; population (1994 est) 204,000. It is a fuelling port and cable centre. Industry also includes oil refining, pharmaceuticals, and trade in fruit. Santa Cruz was bombarded by the British admirals Blake in 1657 and Nelson in 1797 (the action in which he lost his arm).

Province of Spain in the Canary Islands autonomous community; area 3,209 sq km/1,239 sq mi; population (1995) 787,400. It includes the islands of Tenerife, Gomera, La Palma, and Hierro. Tourism is the main industry; there is some agriculture and fruit production, especially bananas. The capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
