Santa Monica

City in Los Angeles County, southwest California, USA, 22 km/14 mi west of the centre of Los Angeles; population (1990) 86,900. It has a beach and is a popular resort and residential area. The principal industry is now tourism, although specialized engineering and aircraft manufacturing are still important. Near Santa Monica is the J Paul Getty Museum with a formidable art collection. The city is home to the Santa Monica College (1929).
