Santa Paula

Santa Paula

City in southwestern California, on the Santa Clara River, 84 km/52 mi northwest of Los Angeles; population (1990) 25,100. It is an oil-producing and refining and lemon-growing centre. It also packs and ships other fruits and nuts and has some light industries.

It was laid out in 1875 and developed in the 1880s–90s. The Unocal (Union Oil Company) Oil Museum and Thomas Aquinas College (1971) are here.
