Santa Rosa

City and administrative headquarters of Sonoma County, northwest California, USA; population (2000) 147,600. It is situated on the Santa Rosa River, 74 km/46 mi north-northwest of San Francisco. It has long been a fruit processing and shipping centre, and was formerly a ranch hub. Other industries include wine, chemicals, and clothing. The city is growing rapidly as a residential community, and has varied agricultural, financial, and light manufacturing industries.

Drawn to its mild climate and fertile soil, the US plant breeder Luther Burbank lived here and developed hundreds of plant varieties in 1875–1926; he is buried in the Memorial Gardens at his home. Santa Rosa Junior College (1918) is also in the city.

Santa Rosa

Town in northwest El Salvador, 22 km/14 mi from Manzanilla; population (1993) 10,300. There is stock-raising, and there are gold and silver mines in the vicinity. A colonial church stands in the hills.
