Santa Rosa de Copán

Administrative capital of the department of Copán in Honduras; population (1995) 24,100. It is a colonial town with cobbled streets, situated 184 km/114 mi northwest of Tegucigalpa. The town is at the centre of a rich agricultural and cattle-raising district, the main crops being tobacco and maize.

There is a traditional hand-rolling cigar factory, the Flor de Copán, in the town, open for tours. An annual festival is held at the end of August. The town was originally known as Los Llanos.

The ruins of a great Mayan city dating from AD 800 are located to the west near Santa Rita, close to the Guatemalan border.
