Santal

Member of one of the largest groups of indigenous peoples in India, found mainly in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Orissa. Their language, Santali, belongs to the Munda language group. Traditionally, they practised shifting cultivation but also hunted and gathered. Today they use the bullock and plough and work as sharecroppers and farm labourers. Many Santals are employed in coal mines and steel factories.
