Santarém

Capital of Santarém district, west-central Portugal, on the River Tagus, 72 km/45 mi northeast of Lisbon; population (1991) 23,700. There is a trade in olive oil, wine, grain, and fruit. The Tagus is spanned at Santarém by a bridge over 1 km/0.5 mi long. There is a medieval convent (now a barracks), and an 18th-century Jesuit seminary.

District of west-central Portugal; area 6,690 sq km/2,583 sq mi; population (1991) 442,700; capital Santarém. The district is crossed northeast to southeast by the River Tagus, and it is a rich agricultural region.
