Santee Sioux Indian Reservation

Reservation in northeastern Nebraska, on Lewis and Clark Lake (the Missouri River) just east of the mouth of the Niobrara River and 113 km/70 mi northwest of Sioux City, Iowa; area 448 sq km/173 sq mi; population (1990) 758 (56% American Indian). It is home to members of the Mdewakanton (Sisseton) and Wahpeton groups of the Eastern Dakota (Sioux), who lived in Minnesota until removal following their 1862 uprising there.
