Santos-Dumont, Alberto (1873-1932)

Brazilian aviator. He took up flying in France and designed and flew a number of light airships between 1898 and 1905. In 1905 he took up aviation, and in 1906 made the first official powered aeroplane flights in Europe with his tail-first biplane 14-bis, based on the box-kite. He later made a light aeroplane, the Demoiselle, a pioneer light aircraft. Soon afterwards he gave up aeronautics. He returned to Brazil in Santos-Dumont was born in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Distressed by the misuse of aircraft in war, he committed suicide in 1932.
