cimbalom

Musical instrument, a Hungarian pedestal dulcimer modernized during the 19th century from a gypsy instrument. It consists of a box-shaped resonator over which strings are stretched laterally, the performer playing front to back rather than across, using light beaters. The sound is brittle, not unlike a fortepiano. Composers include Stravinsky in Renard (1922) and Kodály in the orchestral suite Háry János (1927).
