Nosaka, Sanzo (1892–1993)

Japanese Communist Party leader. He was first elected to the lower house of the Diet (parliament) in 1946 and to the upper house in 1956. At the very end of his life in 1992 he was expelled from the Communist Party on the grounds that documents released in the former USSR revealed that he had betrayed the Japanese Communist Party in the past.

Nosaka joined the underground Communist Party in 1922. Arrested in 1923 and again in 1928, he was released from prison in 1930 due to ill health and went into exile the following year until 1946. During his years abroad he worked for the Comintern in the USA, USSR, and China. He became a leading member of the legalized Communist Party in post-war Japan.
