Saperstein, Abe (1902–1966)

English-born basketball promoter. Saperstein was the coach of a Negro American League basketball team that lost its sponsorship. In 1927 he renamed the team the Harlem Globetrotters, and coached them to victory in the 1940 world professional title and the 1943 and 1944 International Cups. The Globetrotters gradually moved into combining the sport with entertainment. Saperstein was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970.
