Sapir, Edward (1884–1939)

German-born US language scholar and anthropologist who initially studied the Germanic languages but later, under the influence of Franz Boas, investigated indigenous American languages. He is noted for the view now known as linguistic relativity: that people's ways of thinking are significantly shaped (and even limited) by the language(s) they use. His main work is Language: An Introduction to the Study of Speech (1921).
