Sapporo

Capital of Hokkaido prefecture, Japan, on the Ishikari River; population (2000 est) 1,822,000. Industries include rubber, food processing, printing, brewing beer, and lead and zinc mining. It is a winter sports centre and was the site of the 1972 Winter Olympics. Giant figures are sculpted in ice at the annual snow festival. The city has an underground railway.

Sapporo was laid out as an entirely new settlement after 1869, and became the headquarters for the colonization of Hokkaido. The city plan, with its distinctive grid pattern of streets, was American in inspiration. The city is home to Hokkaido University (1876) and Hokkai-Gakuen Kitami University (1885).
