Saragat, Giuseppe

Saragat, Giuseppe (born 1898)

Italian politician. He joined the Socialists in 1922, and lived abroad during most of Mussolini's tenure of power, returning to Italy in 1943. In 1947 Saragat led the wing of the Socialist party which was prepared to participate in Alcide de Gasperi's government, and which, in 1951, adopted the title of the Italian Social Democratic party. Saragat was foreign secretary (1963–64), and then president of the Republic (1964–71).
