Saranac Lakes

Three resort lakes in northeastern New York State, in the Adirondack Mountains, 16 km/10 mi west of Lake Placid. They lie west of Saranac Lake (population (1990) 5,400), the site of the first outdoor sanatorium for tuberculosis, established here in 1876 by Dr Edward Livingston Trudeau, and now a world-famous health resort.

The lakes are Upper Saranac Lake (13 km/8 mi long), Middle Saranac Lake (3 km/2 mi long), and Lower Saranac Lake (8 km/5 mi long); they are linked by the Saranac River, which then flows through the town of Saranac Lake and generally northeast for 80 km/50 mi, entering Lake Champlain at Plattsburgh.
