Saransk

City in the west-central Russian Federation, capital of the Republic of Mordvinia; population (1996 est) 320,000. Saransk lies on the River Insar in the Volga basin, 260 km/162 mi south of Nizhniy-Novgorod. It has varied industries including electrical engineering, light engineering, and food processing.

Saransk is the cultural centre of the Mordvin people; it has a number of theatres, and is home to the Mordvinian State University, founded in 1957. The city was established in 1641 as a fort.
