Sarazen, Gene

Sarazen, Gene (Eugene) (1902–1999)

US golfer. He won the first of his two US open titles in 1922 at the age of 20 and a couple of months later added the US PGA title, which he retained the following year. He won the British Open in 1932 and the Masters in 1935, when he became the first person to complete a ‘set’ of major titles. He represented the USA six times in the Ryder Cup.

Born Eugenio Saraceni, the son of Italian immigrants, he changed his surname in 1916. He is one of only four players to have won all four majors, the others being Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
