Since the 16th century, Sark has been ruled by a hereditary seigneur or dame and the island's flag is also that of the seigneur. The two lions in the canton (top left-hand corner) are taken from the arms of nearby Normandy.

One of the Channel Islands, 10 km/6 mi east of Guernsey; area 5 sq km/2 sq mi; population (2001) 644.

There is no town or village. It is divided into Great and Little Sark, linked by an isthmus, and is of great natural beauty. The Seigneurie of Sark was established by Elizabeth I, the ruler being known as Seigneur/Dame, and has its own parliament, the Chief Pleas.

There is no income tax, divorce and cars are forbidden, and immigration is controlled.
