Sarthe

Département in the Pays de la Loire region of France; area 6,210 sq km/2,398 sq mi; population (1999 est) 529,900. It is crossed from north to southwest by the River Sarthe. Cereals, potatoes, poultry, cider, and perry are produced and horses are bred. Iron, marble, slate, and limestone are found, and there are industries connected with them. Hemp and linen are manufactured. The administrative centre is Le Mans. Other towns include La Flèche and Mamers.

The département was formed in 1790 out of parts of the former provinces of Maine-et-Perche and Anjou. It is generally flat, with low ranges of hills in the north and northwest.
