River in France; length 285 km/177 mi. It rises in the Orne département and flows south through the Sarthe département to join the Loir upstream of Angers. Towns on its banks include Alençon, Le Mans, Sablé-sur-Sarthe, and Châteauneuf-sur-Sarthe. It is navigable from Le Mans.
