Sasebo

Seaport and naval base on the west coast of Kyushu island, Japan; population (1998 est) 244,700. Sasebo has a deep water harbour, and has been a naval base since 1886. It was destroyed in World War II, but was reconstructed as a shipbuilding centre during the Korean War (1950-53). There are metallurgical industries.
