Sassari

Capital of the province of the same name, in the northwest corner of the island of Sardinia, Italy; population (2001) 120,700. Every May it hosts the Sardinian Cavalcade, a major local festival. Cotton is manufactured. There is a cathedral (13th–18th centuries), and a university founded in 1562.
