Sastri, V S Srinvasa

    0.02 sec.

Sastri, V(alangunian) S(ankarana-Rayana) Srinvasa (1869–1946)

Indian politician. He was secretary of the Madras session of Congress in 1908 and took an active part in drawing up the Lucknow pact between the Congress and Muslim League, which demanded ‘responsive government’ for India, and was opposed to Mahatma Gandhi's policy of non-violence and noncooperation. Elected to the Madras Council in 1913, he became a member of the Imperial Legislative Council in 1915 and the Council of State in 1921.

He was a member of the delegation to South Africa that led to the Cape Town agreement, which committed the South African government to shelving its Class Area Bill to segregate Indians. He also struggled for the cause of Indians living in Kenya and British East Africa and was president of the Servants of India Society for some years. In 1945 he strongly opposed Muhammad Ali Jinnah's two-nation proposal.
