satellite television
Transmission of broadcast signals through artificial communications satellites. Mainly positioned in geostationary orbit, satellites have been used since the 1960s to relay television pictures around the world.
Higher-power satellites have more recently been developed to broadcast signals to cable systems or directly to people's homes.
