Sutlej

River in India and Pakistan, forming the border between the two countries for some of its length, a tributary of the River Indus; length 1,370 km/851 mi. It is one of the five rivers which give the Punjab its name. It rises in Tibet, crosses the Himalayas to flow east–southwest across the Punjab; the Beas flows into it, and it joins with the Chenab before flowing into the Indus 1,500 km/900 mi from its source. Since the 1960 Indus Waters Agreement, its waters have been allocated to India: the Bhakra Nangal scheme irrigates via 1,050 km/650 mi of canals some 700,000 ha/1.7 million acres in the Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, and generates 604,000 kW at Bhakra; the Sutlej is also linked with the Ravi and Beas rivers for irrigation purposes.
