Saugus

Town in eastern Massachusetts, in Essex County, at the mouth of the Saugus River on Massachusetts Bay, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Boston and adjoining Lynn; population (2000 est) 26,100. It has various light industries and tourism.

It was the birthplace of the American iron and steel industry in 1646, when the settlement was called Hammersmith. Saugus was one of the first communities in the nation to manufacture shoes and woollens.

Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site includes a reconstruction of the ironworks and is one of three entries for Saugus on the national register of historic places. The Breakheart Reservation, a hardwood forest, and the Rumney March Reservation are protected areas.
