Savannakhet

Capital of Savannakhet province, southern Laos, situated on the east bank of the Mekong River near the Thai border; population (1998 est) 146,400. The city has a soft drinks plant and a sawmill, and is served by an airport. Savannakhet has become an important economic centre since the upgrading of the road to the Vietnamese port of Da Nang was completed in 1989.

Province of southern Laos; population (1990 est) 640,000. The capital is Savannakhet. It is the most populous province of Laos, and is a trading junction between Thailand and Vietnam. Savannakhet is hilly, and rice is grown in its valleys. It has oil, copper, and gold deposits, and there are gypsum mines at Dong Hen.
