Savoie

Département in the Rhône-Alpes region of France; area 6,035 sq km/2,330 sq mi; population (1999 est) 373,300. It is mountainous and wooded. Cereals and vines are cultivated in the valleys, and cattle, sheep, and horses are bred. Some copper and lead are found, and hydroelectric power is produced. There are textile and food manufactures, and an extensive tourist industry. The chief river is the Isère. The administrative centre is Chambéry. Other towns include Albertville and St-Jean-de-Maurienne.

Savoie is formed from the southern half of the former province of Savoy.
