Savona| Seaport and capital of Savona province in Liguria region, northwest Italy, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Genoa; situated on the Riviera di Ponente, on the western shore of the Gulf of Genoa; population (1990 est) 69,800. The city is a ferry port and industrial centre, producing iron, steel, electrical equipment, pottery, and glass. The cathedral was completed in 1602, though the town is mainly modern. |
| In the Middle Ages, Savona was first the ally and later a rival of Genoa; it was annexed by the Genoese in 1528. In 1809 it became the home of Pope Pius VII after his arrest by Napoleon. |
