sawflyAny of several families of insects of the order Hymenoptera, related to bees, wasps, and ants, but lacking a ‘waist’ on the body. The egg-laying tube (ovipositor) of the female is surrounded by a pair of sawlike organs, which it uses to make a slit in a plant stem to lay its eggs. Horntails are closely related.
