whinchat

Bird, genus Saxicola rubetra, family Muscicapidae, order Passeriformes, that favours heaths and open places where it feeds principally on insects. The centre of the throat and breast are a light cinnamon-red, as also are the sides of the body and the abdomen; the general colour above is brown; the head-feathers are edged with sandy-buff. It is a summer visitor to most parts of Europe, and breeds as far north as the Arctic Circle.
