Say, Thomas (1787–1834)

US entomologist and conchologist. Say is considered to be the father of descriptive entomology in America. In 1812 he helped to found the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, and was the zoologist for several American expeditions. He was curator of the American Philosophical Society, 1821–27, then professor of natural history at the University of Pennsylvania until 1928. His works include the three-volume American Entomology (1817–28),
