Scarpe

River in northern France, rising in the Pas-de-Calais département; length 101 km/63 mi. The Deule canal joins it near Arras, and from there, in canalized form, it passes Douai to join the Schelde (French Escaut) near St-Amand. In World War I there was severe fighting all along the Scarpe in August 1918 (see Scarpe, Battle of).
